Classic Hot Yoga (Bikram Yoga)

Classic Hot Yoga (Bikram Yoga) in Derby

Classic Hot Yoga is a type of yoga that involves a sequence of set poses and is usually done in a hot room at or above body temperature. The most popular class on the schedule is our healing sequence of 26 beginner yoga postures and 2 breathing exercises – and for good reason. Our lineage in the studio comes from Ghosh yoga, from which Bikram yoga descends. This yoga focuses heavily on using physical postures to heal the body by building strength and flexibility all around it. Using overhead infrared heaters and underfloor heating, we get the temperature up to 37 degrees Celsius when practising in the studio.

The extra heat helps to relax your muscles and improve cardio-vascular health by increasing your heart rate. You might like to use a space heater if you’re practising with us online from home.

Detoxify Your Body

One of the main advantages you can get from doing a form of hot yoga like Bikram is that the heat helps to detoxify unwanted toxins and chemicals from your body. In a Bikram Yoga studio, the high heat level causes you to sweat like nothing else.

Sweating is excellent for you, and when you sweat, you’re not just dripping water. You are also sweating out a long list of toxins, chemicals, and other unwanted substances along with water that should not be in your body. The heat itself is great for your body, and it’s something that is certainly capitalised upon by Bikram Yoga. Next time, if you want to rid your body of unnecessary things, try Bikram instead of doing one of those juice cleanses.

Increase flexibility

Bikram yoga is a sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises to help heal a wide variety of health conditions, improve balance, strength and flexibility. Having muscles that are more flexible often helps avoid injuries such as strained muscles. In addition, a type of hot yoga such as Bikram Yoga is perfect for flexibility because the warmer the muscles are, the more flexible they become, making it easier to execute the different poses of Bikram while reducing the risk of injury as well.

Reduces stress

Exercise allows the brain to release chemicals in your brain, endocannabinoids as well as endorphins, which have very beneficial effects on your mental well-being. These two chemicals in the brain help to build feelings of satisfaction, elation, euphoria, and calmness, helping to alleviate stress, minimise the symptoms of depression and anxiety, and generally make you feel better. Interestingly enough, endorphins can also decrease the amount of physical pain you endure, making your life so much more fun, and that’s why Bikram is great for reducing stress.

Other useful information

We recommend taking a warm shower or bath before and after our Bikram sessions to prevent muscle injury. Remember to stay well hydrated before, during and after the classes to avoid dehydration. The bikram postures are easily adaptable for all bodies allowing for everyone to be working at their own edge in a group class. Classic Hot yoga is a great class for beginners to start with yoga
